Say whaaaaa?

I was clicking through the TOCs for Molecular Cell, when I noticed a not-too-subtle pattern in the titles of the short “Preview Articles.” Most of the articles were trying really really hard to be f(p)unny. Check this one out:

  2. Chemists should leave puns to comedians. Seriously. We’re trying to run a serious business here, and trying too hard to make a funny can alienate your reader. Maybe it would help if I were a metabolic chemist, but there’s no way I would have guessed that abstract from that title. In trying to ‘get’ the pun, I lost interest in reading the article. Make good science your draw, not clever wordplay.
