DIY spectrometer

A Kickstarter project is aiming to make a kit for simple DIY spectroscopy. For spectra-nerds, this is pretty cool.

  1. Have they done a wavelength calibration with a black body source? Otherwise the spectra are completely messed up due to pixel response and also diffraction efficiency of the DVD. Surprised they get to 3 nm resolution with this optical design.

  2. Yeah, I don’t know how accurate these really are from one device to the next. I wonder how useful their public library of spectra will be. Also, aren’t the spectra of most things already available?

  3. Pretty cool!

Chemistry could use a lot more representation in the “citizen science” scene.
