DIY spectrometer
August 30, 2012 at 1:44 pm | sam | hardware, science@home, wild webA Kickstarter project is aiming to make a kit for simple DIY spectroscopy. For spectra-nerds, this is pretty cool.

Have they done a wavelength calibration with a black body source? Otherwise the spectra are completely messed up due to pixel response and also diffraction efficiency of the DVD. Surprised they get to 3 nm resolution with this optical design.

Yeah, I don’t know how accurate these really are from one device to the next. I wonder how useful their public library of spectra will be. Also, aren’t the spectra of most things already available?

Pretty cool!
Chemistry could use a lot more representation in the “citizen science” scene.
